Training and skills Students learn how to remove badly damaged sections of the body panels using a cutting device and how to weld new pieces. Some dented sections can be repaired rather than replaced. The workers push out dents with hydraulic jacks, pry bars, or work them out with hand tools. Metal and Fiberglass Repair There are times when small dents are worked without any fillers. This is called metal finishing. Often small dents and cuts cannot be worked out, so the workers must fill these with plastic or solder and then smooth them down to the original shape. Auto repair persons also repair fiberglass panels, weld plastic panels, and fill or repair aluminum panels. In some shops the damaged vehicles are sent to the refinishing shop; in others, the auto repairman might do that work. To refinish the vehicle, the damaged area is cleaned of old paint and rust. Parts such as windows, chrome, and headlights, which are not to be painted, are covered or removed. When the car is ready, the painter uses a spray gun to apply primer coats and finally the paint. In between the coats of primer, the surface is smoothed with fine sandpaper to match the rest of the vehicle. Body repair persons and the refinishers usually work by themselves with only general supervision. In large shops, they may have helpers and specialize in one type of repair such as frame straightening. |
